Bicycles 自転車

I am amazed at the number of bicycles in Japan! Maybe, I should not say `Japan` as I cannot speak for the whole country but there are certainly a lot in the area we are living in. It is flat in this area, so I guess it is easy to ride a bicycle here and also it saves some time in getting to the train station.

As a pedestrian, one must constantly be on the look-out for bicycles; some are obviously in a hurry, some ignore traffic signals and nobody has a bell to ring as they zoom up from behind. Some mothers have a child both front and back on their bicycles and it is amazing how many are texting or holding an umbrella, or even doing both while zipping along on their steeds.

When turning a corner while driving a car, one must wait for pedestrians and cyclists to cross before moving forward. I don`t know how many times a cyclist has come, at speed, through a red light just as I am about to make a turn. If I were to hit a cyclist in such a case I, as the car driver, would be held responsible. I have learned to pray as I drive!!

日本では自転車の多いのに驚きます。

日本と言っても、他の日本の地域を細かく調べたわけではないですから十分には言えませんが、私が住んでいる所では自転車が多いです。

平坦な地域なので、自転車に乗り易く歩くより便利で、特に時間の節約に、電車の駅まで乗る人が多いです。

歩行者としては、自転車がいろいろな方角から走ってくるので、絶えず気を付けて歩かなければなりません。

急いで信号を無視したり、後ろから、ベルを鳴らさずにすごいスピードで歩行者の体に触れるぐらい近く横を通り過ぎたりすることがしばしばあります。

母親が、自転車の前と後ろに乗せて走ったり、携帯で話したり、傘を手に持って、スピードを出して自転車に乗る人たちもいます。

全く危ないです。

自動車を運転して、交差点を右折や左折をする時、歩行者の信号も同時に変わるので、歩行者と自転車が歩道を渡り切るまで一時停止して、待たなければなりません。

信号が赤になっても、急に自転車が飛び出してくることが時々あるので何度か自転車と衝突しそうになったことでしょうか。

車が自転車と衝突した場合は車の運転手に責任が問われます。

それで、事故に会わないように祈って運転しています。
