Blindness 盲目

It is easy to think that all we can see and experience is the total reality but actually that is not always the case.

When I was a child we often played softball at school. I was never good at it and was always the last picked for any team. I used to marvel at the way my peers were able to catch the ball and throw it to a team-mate. It was not until I was my second-to-last year at High School that I found out that I was actually quite short-sighted.

私たちは、今、実際に体験していることが全くの現実であると思いやすいです。

しかし、必ずしもそうではないのです。

私は、子供の時によく、ソフトボールをしました。

私はソフトボールが苦手なので、どのチームでも、いつも遠慮され、後回しにされました。

みんながボールを上手に投げ取りできるのが不思議でした。

I still remember the day, more than 50 years earlier when I got my first pair of glasses and went out of the optician's shop. "There are leaves on that tree!!" I cried out in delight and surprise. What I had presumed was reality for everyone was not really so at all. I had presumed that the writing on the school blackboard was unclear to everyone and that no-one could see the ball in a game of softball until nearly hit them on the head.

How often we see things as we have been programmed by our culture and experiences to see them. Only God can open our eyes to see as He sees.

And Elisha prayed, "Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes and he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. — II Kings 6:17

私は高校の二年生になった時に、初めて、強い近視であることが分かりました。

50年以上も昔の時、メガネ屋さんからメガネをかけて外に出た時のことを覚えています。

木々には、美しい葉が付いているのが見えて、興奮して、喜び、叫び声を上げました。

私が現実と思っていたことが、また、みんなも私と同じように感じていると思っていたことが、全く、現実ではありませんでした。

みんなも、私と同じように、黒板の字が良く見えず、ソフトボールの飛んで来る球も頭にボールが当たるくらい近づかないとよく見ないのだ、と思っていました。

私たちは、これと同じように、何としばしば、自分の体験、周囲の文化に影響されて、物事を見ることでしょうか。

神様だけが、心の目、霊の目を開いてくださって、神様の真実を分からせてくださいます。

エリシャは主に願って言った。「どうぞ、彼の目を開いて、見えるようにしてください。」主が、その若い者の目を開かれたので、彼が見ると、なんと、火の馬と戦車がエリシャを取り巻いて山に満ちていた。— II 列王記 6:17
