大勇士ギデオン Gideon the Warrior

アフガニスタンには徹底した男尊女卑の価値観があり、妻は夫から3歩下がって歩かなければいけないと言われています。ところが、どうしたことか、道行く女性たちはみな男の3歩前を歩いていました。これを見たイギリスから来たレポーターが、「女性を尊敬して偉いですね。」とアフガニスタンのレポーターに言うと、「はい、この辺りは地雷が多いものですから」と答えました。

イスラエルはミデヤンとの戦いに敗れ苦戦していました。

それで、ギデオンは敵ミデヤン人に圧倒され、恐れて、逃げ、酒船に隠れて、酒船の中で麦を踏んでいました。

すると、 主の使いが彼に現れて言いました。

「勇士よ。主があなたといっしょにおられる。」

敵から逃げ隠れしている者を「勇士」と呼ぶことができるでしょうか。

この世では、強い人、能力のある人、家柄の良い人、教育のある人、評判の良い人などが選ばれます。

しかし、人の見る目と神様の見る目は異なります。

神様はあえて、弱い人、身分の低い人、軽んじられている人を選びます。

しかし神は、知恵ある者をはずかしめるために、この世の愚かな者を選び、強い者をはずかしめるために、この世の弱い者を選ばれたのです。コリント 1:28

神の選びに対してギデオンは否定的でした。

「ああ、主よ。私にどのようにしてイスラエルを救うことができましょう。ご存じのように、私の分団はマナセのうちで最も弱く、私は父の家で一番若いのです。」士師記 6:15

しかし、神様はギデオンに仰せられました。

「わたしはあなたといっしょにいる。だからあなたはひとりを打ち殺すようにミデヤン人を打ち殺そう。」士師記 6:16

臆病で、懐疑的なギデオンはしるしを求めました。

神の使いはこれに答えて、岩の上に置かれた、パンと肉に杖で火を起こして、パンと肉を焼く奇跡を起こします。

それでも、ギデオンは依然と懐疑的なので、神の使いは羊の毛を濡らし周りの地面を濡らさない奇跡と、羊の毛を濡らさずに、周りの地面を濡らす奇跡を起こします。

こうして、ギデオンを指導者として、ミデヤン軍と戦うために三万二千の兵が集められました。

しかし、神は神の栄光を表すために、兵の数を減らします。

最初に集まった三万二千の兵から、恐れおののく者は帰され、二万二千の兵士が去り、一万の兵が残りました。

しかし、神様は、まだ多すぎると言って、水を飲むときに、犬が舐めるように、舌でなめた者は取り除き、片膝をついて、手で水をすくい、口に手を当てて、水をなめたものが選ばれました。

このテストで、敵が急に襲ってきた時に備え、いつでも戦える準備をしていない者は失格しました。

良い兵士は絶えず、油断せずに、戦いの備えをしています。

最後に残った数はわずか三百人でした。

それにしても、敵から逃げ隠れしていた臆病だったギデオンが100倍の数の敵に向かって、攻撃をかけるのですから大変な勇気です。

それで、敵が寝ている間に奇襲攻撃をします。

三つの隊が別々の方角から角笛を吹き鳴らして、つぼを打ち砕き、それから左手にたいまつを堅く握り、右手に吹き鳴らす角笛を堅く握って、「主の剣、ギデオンの剣だ。」と叫び、攻撃しました。

敵は、イスラエルの大軍が襲ってきたと思ったのでしょう。

奇襲攻撃をされたミデヤンの兵士たちは動揺し、夜で、よく見えないので、同士討ちが起こりました。

300人のギデオンの精鋭は大勝利を得ました。

発明王になったエジソンと、イギリスの首相になり、イギリスを第二次世界大戦中、ドイツの攻撃から救ったチャーチルは小学校での成績は良くなかったです。

臆病で懐疑的であったギデオンは神の招きに従った時に300人の数で3万の軍隊に勝つことができました。

弱く、臆病で、才能が無くても、神を信じ、自らを捧げるなら、神はその者を用い、不思議な技をなし、成功をおさめさせてくださいます。

It is said that in Afghanistan, where women are subservient to men, women are supposed to walk three steps behind a man. However, for some reason, women were walking three steps in front of their menfolk. Seeing this, a reporter from England commented to a reporter from Afghanistan, “It is great to see the obvious respect for women.” “Yeah, well there are a lot of landmines in this area.”

The Israelites were defeated and struggling in their battle against the Midianites. Gideon was overwhelmed by the Midianites and fearful so he hid in an underground winepress to thresh out the grain he had. An angel from the Lord appeared and said to him, “The Lord is with you mighty warrior.” Can you really call a man hiding from his enemy a `brave warrior`? In the world usually, a person who is strong, talented, from a good family, with a good education and a good reputation is the one chosen. God looks at things from a different perspective from us. He dares to choose the weak, people without social standing, those who are looked down on. “God chose what is insignificant in the world, what is despised, what is nothing, in order to destroy what is something,” I Corinthians 1:28.

Gideon was very negative in response to God`s calling saying, “How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” But God encouraged him, “I will be with you, and you will strike down the Midianites as if they were but one man.” Judges 6:16. The cowardly, skeptical Gideon asked for a sign from God. The angel responded by touching the meat and bread which had been laid on a rock with his staff and caused fire to burn it up. Even after witnessing this miracle Gideon was still skeptical. He asked that the dew would fall only on a fleece he laid out on the ground one night and only on the ground around the fleece the next night.

Gideon was chosen to lead the Israelite army against the Midianites and gathered together 32,000 men. In order that God would get all the glory for the victory, God told Gideon that he had too many men. Those who were fearful were told to return home and 22,000 men left while 10,000 remained. Still, God said that there were too many men. When the men were taken to a river to drink those who knelt down to drink were rejected but those who lapped the water like a dog were chosen. This test was done in order to find the soldiers who would be continually on their guard, watchful and ready to defend themselves should the enemy suddenly approach.　A wise soldier will be constantly on the alert. Gideon was finally left with only 300 soldiers. The man who was hiding in fear from the enemy was now about to take on a foe 100 times more numerous than his army, so this must have required great courage from Gideon.

He planned a surprise attack while the enemy were sleeping. Gideon divided his men into three groups and they approached the enemy from different angles. Each man had a jar with a torch inside it and a trumpet in the other hand. They broke the jar and blew the trumpets then, with the torch in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands they yelled, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon.” The Midianites probably thought a huge army of Israelites had attacked. Because it was night and because they panicked, the Midianites started attacking their fellowmen. Gideon and his three hundred men won a great victory.

Both the great inventor Edison and Churchill, who lead England as Prime Minister through the Second World War, had very poor scholastic results at Primary School. Cowardly, skeptical Gideon was able to win a victory over 30,000 men with only 300 soldiers when he obeyed God`s call to him.

Even if we are weak, cowardly and not talented, if we trust God and offer ourselves to Him, He will use us and do things through us that are amazing.
