「避けどころとなる神」ヤコブ2 God Our Refuge

戦争中に使われた防空壕を譲り受け、新しく内装し、今もきれいにして使っている人がいました。その防空壕には頑丈なドアがついていました。それで訪問客が「平和な時代に、今もこうして防空壕をなぜ大事に保存しているのですか。」と尋ねると、その人は、「私の家内は元プロレスラ―で、夫婦喧嘩の時に、身の危険を感じるので安全のために防空壕に逃げて、内側から鍵をかけるんです。」と答えました。

危険に直面して、恐れ、不安、孤独を感じる時にどこに助けを求めたらよいのでしょうか。

特に相談できる、親しい友人もいない一人ぼっちな時、途方に暮れてしまいます。

ヤコブはこのような境遇にあった時に、全能なる神様を避けどころにしました。

神様を信じている者にとって、神様は苦しむときの避けどころ、助けです。

神はわれらの避け所、また力。苦しむとき、そこにある助け。それゆえ、われらは恐れない。たとい、地は変わり山々が海のまなかに移ろうとも。たとい、その水が立ち騒ぎ、あわだっても、その水かさが増して山々が揺れ動いても。詩篇46:1,2,3

ヤコブは兄エサウを二度もだましたので、兄のエサウは怒りました。

一度は長子の特権を奪い、二度目は父からの祝福の祈りを横取りしました。

それでエサウは心の中で「父の喪の日も近づいている。そのとき、弟ヤコブを殺してやろう。」と言いました。

20年ほどたって、弟のヤコブにだまされた兄のエサウが400人の部下を従えヤコブを待ち構えているとの知らせを受けました。

これを知って、ヤコブは兄エサウが復讐し殺されると思い恐れました。

兄の怒りを抑えるために多数のやぎ、羊、ラクダ、ロバ、牛などの家畜の贈り物を自分の家族とともに先に遣わし、自分は一人残ります。

そして、祈りはじめます。

すると神の使いが現れたので、彼と組み討ちをして、祈り求めました。

「どうか私の兄、エサウの手から私を救い出してください。私はあなたを去らせません。私を祝福してくださらなければ。」創世記 32:11, 24-32　

この執拗な祈りの結果ヤコブは勝利を得ます。

どんなことがあっても執拗に、あきらめないで求め続けることが勝利につながります。

全く、期待に反し、「エサウは復讐するどころか、ヤコブを抱き、首に抱きついて口づけし、二人は泣きました。」

エサウはヤコブに対する復讐心を捨て彼を快く歓迎したのです。

祈りの結果、神様がエサウの心を変えたのです。

神様は敵対する人間の憎しみの心を、赦す愛の心に変えてくださいます。

憎しみに満ちた冷たい心も、暖かい神の愛に触れると、氷のように溶かされるのです。

私たちは自分の力ではなかなか自分に敵対する者の心を変えることはできません。

超自然的な神様の力が必要です。

神様の御手を動かすのは祈りです。

祈りこそ勝利の秘訣です。　　　　

ロシアである牧師さんが迫害され牢屋に入れられました。残された家族は食べる物に困りはじめ、夕食時にお腹をすかせた子供たちは泣き始めました。母親は必死に祈りました。すると、調度祈った時に、30キロも離れた所に住む金持にその教会の牧師さんの家に食べ物を届けるように神様が示されました。その人は、シベリヤの外は寒く狼が出るので行きたくありませんでしたが、我慢して食糧を届けました。すると、その母親と子供たちが神様はきっと祈りに答えてくださると運ばれる食べ物を待っていました。

「私は山に向かって目を上げる。私の助けは、どこから来るのだろうか。私の助けは、天地を造られた主から来る。」詩篇 121:1

ヤコブは神様を避けどころとして、祈り助けを求めたので、恐れと、不安と孤独を克服できました。　　　　

復讐心に燃えた兄エサウの心は赦しの心に変えられました。

神様を「避けどころ」として、苦しい時に助けを求めることができる人は誠に幸いです。

A man had an air raid shelter which had been used in the war and which he kept clean and used even now. It had a solid door on it. A visitor asked him, “In this peaceful age why do you still keep an air raid shelter clean?” “My wife used to be a professional wrestler and when we have an argument it is dangerous if she becomes violent so I run in here and lock the door!”

When we face danger or feel fear, uncertainty and loneliness where can we go for help? Especially when we have no friend nearby with whom we can talk we wonder what to do. When Jacob faced such a situation he went to the Almighty God for refuge. For those who believe in God, He is our refuge and hiding place in times of trouble. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46:1-3.

Jacob cheated his brother twice and of course Esau was angry. He took the birthright away first and then got his father`s prayer of blessing by trickery as well. Esau, therefore, decided in his heart that when his father died he would kill his brother, Jacob. Twenty years later, Jacob heard the news that Esau, who he had cheated of his blessings, was on his way to meet Jacob accompanied by 400 men. Jacob was terrified as he imagined that his brother was intending to get his revenge and kill Jacob. In order to try and calm his brother down Jacob sent a huge gift of goats, camels, donkeys and sheep and sent his family on ahead as well. Jacob was left alone and began to pray. “Save me I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau…….I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Genesis 32:11, 26.

As a result of his fervent prayer, Jacob was victorious. Whatever happens, persistent, fervent prayer leads to victory. Completely against his expectations, Esau ran to meet his brother, embraced him and kissed him. They both wept. Esau gave up the desire for revenge and welcomed Jacob warmly. God changed Esau`s attitude through prayer. God can change a person`s hatred into a forgiving heart of love. A cold, hate-filled heart will melt as it meets the warmth of God`s love. We are unable ourselves to change another person`s heart. God`s supernatural power is necessary. Prayer moves the hand of God. Prayer is indeed the key to victory.

A pastor in Russia was imprisoned for his faith. His family struggled to get food and one evening the children wept with hunger. Their mother prayed earnestly. At the same time, a Christian man living 30 kilometres away was told clearly by God to take food to this family. He did not want to go as it was cold in Siberia and there were wolves along the path but he did as he was told. He found that the family had just eaten their last bit of food and were overjoyed to experience this answer to prayer. “I lift up my eyes to the hills from whence my help comes.” Psalm 121:1.

Jacob went to God, his refuge, and prayed for help. As a result, he was able to overcome his fear, anxiety and loneliness. Esau`s heart was changed from one seeking revenge to one ready to forgive. We are truly blessed if we know God as our refuge and turn to Him for help in times of trouble.
