外面と内面 Outer versus Inner

この間、少し値段の高めの、大きくて、立派で美味しそうなリンゴを買いました。　

でも、驚いたことに、食べてみると、甘くなくて、水分がなくて、実が引き締まっていなくて、全然おいしくありませんでした。

外側は立派でも、中身は良くありませんでした。

The other day, I bought a big, juicy-looking apple that was a little expensive. However, to my surprise, when I bit into it, it was neither juicy nor delicious and the flesh was dry and coarse. It did not taste good at all! Even though the outside looked amazing, the inside was no good.

人にも同じことが言えます。イエス・キリストは、律法主義的なユダヤ教徒たちに言いました。

「わざわいだ。偽善の律法学者、パリサイ人。おまえたちは白く塗った墓のようなものです。墓のその外側は美しく見えても、内側は、死人の骨や、あらゆる汚れたものがいっぱいです。 そのように、おまえたちも外側は人に正しく見えても、内側は偽善と不法でいっぱいです。」マタイ23:27，28

彼らは、細かい律法を守り、人々の前に立派に見えるために、立派な服装で着飾ったり、通りで長い祈りをしたり、宴会での上座を好んだり、先生と呼ばれることを好みました。

しかし、人々に対する愛と憐れみの心を忘れ、賤しい職についている人たちを軽蔑し、裁きました。

We could say the same sometimes about people. When talking to the legalistic Jewish leaders Jesus Christ said, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like white-washed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men`s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Matthew 23:27, 28

They obeyed many detailed laws and in order to look good to others, wore the correct clothes and prayed long prayers on street corners. They loved to be called `teacher` and to get the best seats at banquets. However, they omitted to be loving and merciful to others and looked down on and were judgmental to people in “low” positions.

日本は肩書社会で、形式を重んじます。

良い肩書を持っている人を、立派な人間であると判断する傾向があります。

しかし、家よりも、その中に住んでいる人が大切なように、外面に気を配りすぎ、内面を軽視すると、落とし穴にはまります。

神様は、外面の顔かたち、家柄、学歴、地位などを見るのではなく、その人内面の心を見ます。

人の価値は、外面だけで、判断されるべきものではなく、内面で判断されるべきものです。

外面ばかりに気を取られ、内面をおろそかにしない人でありたいものです。

Japan is a society which values titles and formalities. There is a tendency to judge a person to be respectable if they hold a good title. However, just as the people living in a house are more important than the building itself, we can be deceived if we pay too much attention to the outward appearance and do not regard the inner aspects. God is not concerned with how a person looks, their lineage, education or social standing, He looks only at their heart. We should not make judgements about a person`s value by their outward appearance but according to their inner qualities. It would be great if we could be the kind of person who is not just caught up with outward appearances but one who is able to see the other`s heart.
