空気を読む Reading Between the Lines

人々の気持を支配するその場の情況、雰囲気を読むことを「空気を読む」と言います。

先週、司馬遼太郎著の「義経」を読みました。

私の最大の関心は「平家を打ち破り、源氏に勝利をもたらす」ことに多大な貢献をした義経が、「なぜ兄の頼朝に憎まれ、頼朝に殺されようとしたか。」でした。

義経は天才的な戦略家で、あれ程戦いが上手な人は世界史上でも、稀であると言われています。

義経の存在失くしては少数の兵で大軍の平家を打ち破ることはできなかったでしょう。

しかし、義経は軍事においては抜群な観察力、先見の目、戦略、決断力を持っていましたが、政治に関しては「空気が読めません」でした。

それが、彼が頼朝に、憎まれ、殺されようとした原因でした。

頼朝は武士の新しい政権を「鎌倉幕府」を設立して、平家同様に、公家、朝廷（天皇）支配から脱却しようとしていました。

鎌倉幕府は北条家などの多くの武士の軍団によって集合され出来ました。

それで、頼朝はそれぞれの地方の土地を持った武士軍団たちと同盟的な関係を最初に築き、徐々に御家人として、将軍とそれに仕える武士たちとの主従関係を築こうとしていました。

しかし、義経は京都で公家の影響を受けて育ったので、鎌倉幕府の構成を全く理解していませんでした。

頼朝の弟であることを理由にほとんど同等であると思われる、武士たちに命令し、彼らの怒りを買いました。

また頼朝を無視して、朝廷から官位をうけ「判官」と呼ばれるようになりました。

これは頼朝を激怒させました。

そして、京都では義経は公家のように化粧をして、公家を崇拝して生活しました。

この生き方にも、頼朝はたとえ義経が弟であっても我慢できませんでした。

こうして、義経の存在は鎌倉幕府に脅威を与える存在となりました。

義経はやがて、頼朝に追われ、奥州で自害したと言われています。

義経の悲劇は「戦いの空気」は読めても「政治の空気」は読めなかったことです。

「知恵を捨てるな。それがあなたを守る。これを愛せ。これがあなたを保つ。」箴言 4：6

Reading between the lines is being able to understand from the atmosphere in the place what is really going on. I read a book recently written about two famous brothers from Japan`s history. The younger brother, Yoshitsune, was instrumental in defeating the much larger army of the Taira clan and yet his life was sought by his own brother. I was especially interested in finding out why he was disliked so much by his brother even though he was a world class strategist in war tactics and without him his family would probably not have been able to defeat their enemy.

The younger brother had superb powers of observation, strategy planning, seeing ahead and decision making in terms of military affairs. However, when it came to political matters he was unable to read between the lines. That was the reason his older brother hated him and wished for his death. The older brother, Yoritomo, established the Kamakura Shogunate in an effort to overthrow the other clans. The Kamakura Shogunate was composed of samurai from a number of different clans. Yoritomo formed an alliance with a number of land-owning samurai groups and gradually set himself up as the leader in a slave-master type of relationship.

Yoshitsune who had been brought up in Kyoto, apart from his older brother, Yoritomo, did not understand the setting up of the Kamakura Shogunate. Because he was Yoritomo`s younger brother, Yoritsune was thought of as equal to his brother. He gave orders to other samurai and this caused friction. Also, without reference to Yoritomo, the Imperial court bestowed a high official title on Yoshitsune. This further fueled the anger of Yoritomo. Later, in Kyoto, Yoshitsune dressed as a court noble and vowed allegiance to the court. Even though he was Yoritomo’s brother, Yoritomo could no longer put up with what Yoshitsune was doing because his stand threatened the newly formed Kamakura Shogunate. Therefore Yoshitsune had to flee from his brother and it is said that he eventually committed suicide. Being able to understand military tactics does not necessarily mean that a person is also politically astute. It was tragic that he was not aware of the political climate of the day.
