相対性 Relativity

物の価値観は状況によって、変わります。

例えば、同じ一時間でも、状況によって、長く感じたり、短く感じたりします。

急いでいるときに、銀行で一時間待たされたり、頭痛や腹痛の苦しみに一時間、耐えたりするときに、その一時間は長く感じます。

しかし、ゲームに熱中していたり、恋人と話し合ったりしているときには一時間は「あっ」、と言う間に過ぎ、短く感じます。

One's sense of values changes according to their situation. For example, the same one hour, 60 minutes, feels longer or shorter according to the situation. If you are in a hurry and have to wait at the bank or have a severe headache or stomachache, one hour can seem very long. If, however, you are engrossed in a game or spending time with your loved one, the same hour can appear to fly by.

私はニュージーランドで20年近く高校の教師をしていましたが、毎年教師たちの写真を撮る時に背の高さ順に並ばされました。

私の身長は170cmですが、ニュージーランドではいつも前の方に、背の低い方に並ばされました。

しかし、浦安市に来て、3年半近くになり、毎週シニアのテニスをして、40人近くの人に出会いますが、自分は平均より背が高く、日本に来てから背が高くなった感じがします。

While living in New Zealand I spent 20 years as a High School teacher. Every year, when it was time for the staff photograph we had to line up in order of height. I am 170 cm tall so, in New Zealand, I always had to line up near the front of the line with other short staff members. About 3 years and 6 months have passed now since I came to live in Urayasu, Japan. Every week, in the tennis circles I belong to, I meet about 40 other members and find that my height is above the average so, since coming here, I feel tall.

それで、普通、自分より、金持ちや、恵まれた人と比較すると落ち込んだり、妬ましくなったりします。

それと反対に、自分よりも、貧しくて、恵まれていない環境の人たちを思うと感謝の心が湧いてきます。

このように、周囲の状況によって価値観が変わってくるので、どこを見つめるかが大事になります。

When we compare ourselves with someone who is richer or better off than we are, we feel depressed or envious. On the other hand, when we compare ourselves with someone in a worse condition than ourselves, we may feel thankful. In these ways, according to our situation, our sense of values changes. Therefore, where wi direct our attention is very important.

目に見える周囲の状況に左右されない、信仰を持ち、昨日も今日もとこしえに変わらない、イエス様に目を注いで歩めたら幸いです。

We will be blessed if we are not swayed by what we see around us but have faith and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ who remains constant forever.

信仰の創始者であり、完成者であるイエスから目を離さないでいなさい。— ヘブル 12:2
